Leverage Suffering To Lead
Right now there is so much suffering in the world, from hurricanes, to sickness, to the unfair treatment of marginalized people and even a debate about whether people should be afforded the opportunity to remain alive through affordable healthcare. It made me begin to think about how suffering equips us for challenging things in this lifetime while forcing us to review our beliefs about who we are and what we value. While this can be a very uncomfortable place for many of us (Raises hand) it’s also necessary to reach our full potential.
Leaders Connect Through Empathy
As leaders who are charged with being courageous and helping followers reach their full potential, they must also become acquainted with the sort of suffering that I point out via this article in order to make decisions from growth of experience rather than comfort of title. The connection between a leader’s suffering and their ability to lead effectively comes from empathy or the ability to see others in a certain way because of their own experiential knowledge and or pain. I would even go as far as to question if a leader can truly empathize with their followers unless they seek to understand them first.
