Former NFL Linebacker Dr. Jason Carthen shares that no two followers are the same and everyone learns differently as they grow and mature as followers. The greatest opportunity to engage the follower is to meet them where “they are” and not necessarily where the leader thinks they should be. Now this requires patience and an understanding of the stages of learning when you interact with your followers and colleagues. The levels are Knowledge, Comprehension, Assessment, Analysis, Synthesis and Evaluation. When these levels are understood, the leader has an opportunity to get out in front of the follower and problem solve to make sure they can accurately engage and assess the followers growth in their current position or role. When ignored, frustration is going to set in because the leader may be unrealistically working from expectations of the follower’s cognition!
