A Systems Approach to Management
What is a systems approach? A systems approach to management views an organization as several smaller parts, or systems, and each system executes its functions as an independent unit. In this approach, management, or leadership steers the company into the directions it wishes to go, with the understanding, each system must determine how to reach those strategic goals to fulfill the mission of the leadership. A systems approach has been shown to give better and more efficient results as a function of its progression. The entire systems approach can be broken into three parts – input, process and output.
- Input: Input involves the raw materials, funds and technology.
- Process: The process refers to activities related to management, technology and operations.
- Output: The products and results are the output.

The systems approach to management is the key to coordinate all the processes in an organization, and define the importance of individual procedures in the firm. It forces managers to view their organization as part of a whole rather than separate silos. It also encourages managers to focus on better communication and cooperation within the organization.This interdependent system allows the leader to remain informed about the overall health of the organization while giving them the flexibility to make modifications or mid-course corrections based upon information the system provides.
